Every pair of hearing protection ever made works the same way. It seals your ear canal and stops sound from getting in. That is the mechanism, and it is why the good ones work.
It is also why so many people do not wear them.
On a job site, in a shop, on a trail or in a blind, being sealed off is its own hazard. You cannot hear a spotter. You cannot hear a backing alarm, a horn, a machine starting to sound wrong, a truck pulling in behind you, or someone calling your name from across the bay. So people leave one earbud out, or push the plug in halfway, or skip protection until the loud part starts and then forget to put it back.
None of that is carelessness. It is a real tradeoff between a risk you can hear coming and one you cannot. The Allert exists because that tradeoff was never actually necessary.
What people try instead, and why it does not hold up
Transparency mode on consumer earbuds. A microphone picks up the outside world and plays it back to you. It works, in the sense that you can hear the room. The problem is that it does not choose. The saw comes through with the conversation, at whatever level the saw is running. Transparency solves the awareness problem by switching the protection off.
One earbud out. Now half your hearing is unprotected, and it is the half pointed at whatever you are working on.
Noise cancelling headphones. These reduce steady background drone electronically. They carry no NRR rating, and they do nothing for sudden loud noise, which is the noise that causes immediate damage. OSHA addressed this directly in a March 2023 interpretation letter, stating that most consumer ANC headphones “are not effective for controlling occupational noise exposure because they do not offer protection from sudden, explosive sounds.”
Nothing at all. The most common choice, and the one that shows up as measurable hearing loss twenty years later.
What the Allert does differently
The Allert starts as an earplug, not as an earbud with a noise claim attached to it. The tip seals the ear canal and physically blocks sound, and that blocking is tested and rated: 26 dB NRR with the single-tier foam tips, 21 dB with the ComforTiered silicone tips, measured under ANSI S3.19-1974 and NIOSH tested. Nothing about that seal depends on electronics working correctly or reacting fast enough.

Bluetooth 5.2. Stable connection past 33 feet, and beyond 100 feet with a direct line of sight. Enough to set your phone down on a bench and keep moving.
Fit options. Foam tips in small and medium, ComforTiered silicone tips, replacement fins and fin-less attachments, all in the box. The fit is what the NRR depends on, so having real options is not a nicety.
Also in the box. Charging hard case, USB-C cable, quick-start guide. Sweat resistant, with a tuned speaker, and covered by a one year limited manufacturer’s warranty.
Where it earns its keep
Trades and jobsites. Construction, manufacturing, warehouses and shops, where hearing a spotter or an alarm is not optional and site policy often restricts consumer earbuds for exactly that reason.
Landscaping crews. A walk behind mower runs around 90 dB, which is at the OSHA limit for a full shift before a blower or trimmer is involved. Crews also work in traffic and around homeowners, which makes hearing what is happening around you a safety requirement rather than a preference.
Mechanics. Impact wrenches run 100 to 110 dB, and diagnosing a problem by ear is part of the job.
Riders. Wind noise at highway speed is sustained and genuinely damaging, and traffic awareness is the whole game.
Anywhere it is loud for a long time. Warehouses, shops, plants, yard work, range days. If you are somewhere loud enough to need protection, you are almost certainly somewhere you still need to hear something.
What the Allert adds

One thing worth stating plainly
You will see earbuds advertised as “OSHA approved.” No such thing exists. OSHA does not approve, certify or list hearing protection products. What it does is set an exposure limit and require that protection be adequate for the noise you are measured in.
That is why the NRR matters. A tested rating under a named standard is something a safety manager can document against a real measurement. A marketing claim about decibels of noise reduction is not, and cannot be entered into a compliance record.
